Phillips realized she was much more social when she returned to the gym as she was pre-pandemic workouts. I would avoid people so I didn’t need to talk to anyone.” But, Phillips found herself budgeting 10 minutes or so of extra time at her exercise facility in Ames, Iowa for chit-chat. “I started speaking to people I had seen since before the pandemic, and I had not spoken to them before,” she says. “But I came back to say, ‘I’m glad to see you.’ That motivated me to talk with people. It was wonderful to be noticed and respected by other people. There was a general feeling that we were there. We got through the pandemic. It was a breath of fresh air. Then I became an individual.”
